The editor of the York Daily Record on Aprl 19, 1993, had this in his editorial when half of the stained glass windows were installed: A clear vision: Many of York's fine old churches boast magnificent stained glass windows, but we think none can rival the beauty of the new stained glass windows at Salem United Church of Christ in Jacobus. Rather than buying expensive, professional stained glass windows, congregants made their own. The money saved can go to the stated true work of the church - spreading the Gospel and helping people, rather than buildings.
A long time ago, Hugh of St. Victor wrote, "Stained glass windows are Holy Scriptures...and since their brilliance lets the splendor of the True Light pass into the church, they enlighten those inside." If someone inside this church is enlightened and comes to the True Light (Christ), the over 4,000 volunteer hours cutting and putting together over 5,700 pieces of glass will have been very worthwhile.
You are invited to see our windows, but more importantly we would love to have you worship God with us on Sunday mornings.
